The City of Auxerre (pronounced Oh-ssair) is easily reached by road,
either via the A6 Autoroute from Paris, the A26 from the Channel ports,
or by Eurostar train.
Beautifully sited over looking the Yonne river, Auxerre justly prides
itself on a fine collection of ancient churches. The best of which are:-
The Gothic Cathedral of St-Etienne took over three centuries to build
and was completed around 1560. The celebrated Benedictine abbey St- Germain
was built in the sixth century.
Cruising routes will include the Yonne river, north to the Canal du Bourgogne
or south to the Canal du Nivernais, considered by many to be the most
beautiful canal in France.
Points of interest along the way can include the ancient towns of Vezelay
and Avallon, regional markets, food and wine festivals and art exhibitions.
Wherever possible, overnight stops will be made adjacent to small towns
or villages, where good local restaurants can be found.
